In a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study, 30 participant with major depressive disorder were treated for over 8 weeks with 20 mg of Fluoxetine per day and either tryptophan (daily dose 2 –  4 g ) or a placebo. The findings were  a pronounced greater reduce in depression scores in the tryptophan/fluoxetine group than in the placebo/fluoxetine group. A Dutch researcher showed that the combination of vitamin B6 (125 mg 3 times daily) and tryptophan (2 g used at night)  could restore participants with anxiety-type depression to normal in 4 weeks. The findings demonstrate that tryptophan in doses of 1 grams or more produces an improve in rated subjective sleepiness and a reduce in sleep latency. In an study, eight severe chronic insomniacs took 2 g for four nights. All participants developed significantly and no adverse effects were seen.

A  review article reported in “Psychopharmacology” found that amino acid tryptophan is useful for the therapy of insomnia in doses ranging from 1 to 15 grams. Some researches have confirmed tryptophan to be effective in the therapy of chronic insomnia at doses of between 1 to 4 g at bedtime. Some uncontrolled studies report that 3 to 6 grams per day of tryptophan helps develop mood in patients with depression. For the treatment of depression, tryptophan should be given in at least 2 divided doses per day, in order to reduce fluctuations in plasma L-tryptophan concentrations. In a clinical trial at St. Mary’s Hospital, scientists gave 6,000 mg of tryptophan to PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) participants. After seventeen days of therapy, starting at ovulation till the third day of menstruation, it was found that tryptophan developed mood symptoms. 100 mg of 5 HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is equivalent to 500mg L-tryptophan.

Side Effects

Do not take l-tryptophan together with full doses of serotonin-enhancing drugs. This therapy should be undertaken only with a physician supervision. In addition; do not use tryptophan if taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

For people who were sick enough to be hospitalized, conventional medicine had a mortality of 30 percent while with 27,000 documented hospitalized cases, homeopathy was reporting a mortality of 1-3 percent. Research by the doctor Dr Andre Saine of more than 61,000 confirmed cases of  Spanish Flu between 1918 and 1919 has shown that patients treated with homeopathy experienced death rates of 0.7 % as opposed to more than 30 % for patients of conventional treatment. According the Dr. Frank Wieland,“8,000 workers we had only one death. Gelsemium was  the only remedy used. We used no vaccines and no aspirin.”

Homeopathy Clinical Studies

Findings from an observational study of over 3000 people with chronic conditions such as headache and allergic rhinitis in adults, and atopic dermatitis and recurrent infections in children, demonstrated improved quality of life associated with use of homeopathy with positive effects persisting for eight years.

The British Medical Journal in 1991 reported a large analysis of homeopathic cure that were given over the course of 25Homeopathyyears. In one trial reported in Lancet by Dr. David Taylor Reilly compared the effects of a homeopathic hay-fever remedy with a placebo. In this double-blind controlled experiment, those who received the homeopathic remedy had 6 times fewer symptoms. In a randomised double-blind study homoeopathic therapy was compared to therapy by Chloroquine. The group using homoeopathic remedy experienced an 83.% progress, while the group using Chloroquine experienced a 72% development within the same time period (British Homoeopathic Journal, 1996, April).

In a study reported in the “International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics” concluded that homeopathy should be the first line therapy for acute ear infections in children. The group of 103 children who received individualised homeopathic remedy had fewer ear infections over the following year, compared with the children who received conventional therapy. 114 children attending a paediatric practice where conventional and homeopathic remedies were used, and who were previously diagnosed with ADHD, were given individualised homoeopathic remedies. On a parent assessed basis, if a minimum 50 percent improvement was not noted within a certain period of time they were placed on Methylphenidate. 75% of the children responded to homoeopathy and 22% required Methylphenidate.(British Homoeopathic Journal 2001)

In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study, 63 asthma sufferers were treated for four months with either specific homoeopathic medicaments or placebo. Usually thought to only support normal bowel function and blood glucose and lipid levels, certain polysaccharides have attracted growing scientific interest for their ability  to exert pronounced effects on immune system function, cancers and inflammation. Extracts of Ganoderma have showed the capability to stimulate macrophages and to alter the levels of interleukin and TNF. Maitake (Grifola frondosa) and the maitake D-fraction prepared from them contain a type of polysaccharide, called beta glucan. Most of the studies on maitake D-fraction has been done in Japan using an injectable form of the extract. Grifola frondosa is thought to exert its effects through its ability to activate various effector cells, such as macrophages, T cells and NK cells, as well as superoxide anions and interleukin-1. A 1997 study reported in the “Annals of the New York Academy of Science” found that Maitake D-fraction was able to increase the immune system and inhibit the spread of tumors in mice implanted with breast cancer.

In clinical studies, Grifola frondosa has been found to increase the activity of 3 very important elements of the immune system (macrophages, T-cells, NK-cells ) by among 140% and 200%. A forty-five year old a female with estrogen-responsive breast cancer underwent surgery in 1992 to remove the tumor, which measured 1.8 cm. The antitumor activity of Agaricus extracts have been attributed to the induction of apoptosis of cancer cells and the activation of natural killer cells. Cellular and animal model studies have shown that agaricus mushroom may also stimulate immune cells to enhance the production of cytokines. At the “Medical Department of Tokyo University“, mice with cancerous tumors were fed with ABM. The cancerous tumors were eliminated in 90 percent of the mice. Experiments in animal-based has shown that astragalus membranaceus seemingly works by stimulating different factors of the immune system, including enhancing phagocytic activity of monocytes and macrophages, increasing interferon production and NK (natural killer) cell activity, enhancing T-cell activity, and potentiating other antiviral mechanisms. Researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center found that astragalus extract boosted the cell-destroying ability, or cytotoxicity, of the conventional immune system drug interleukin-2  by helping cells of the immune system.  In a study done with 115 patients on chemotherapy, over 80% showed higher white blood cell counts when taking Astragalus.

Fermented Noni Juice (Morinda Citrifolia)

Noni is the general name for Morinda citrifolia, a small evergreen tree found in Polynesia. The fruitjuice of noni contains a polysaccharide-rich substance with antitumor activity in the Lewis lung peritoneal carcinomatosis model. Noni possesses antitumor activity by stimulating immune factors like Tumor Necrosis Factor, NK cells (Natural killer cells) etc. to attack the tumor. Researchers at the “Department of Pharmacology in the University of Hawaii“, demonstrated conclusively that the high polysaccharide content of Morinda citrifolia inhibits tumours in mice. An immunomodulatory polysaccharide-rich substance (Noni-ppt) from the fruit juice of noni has been found to possess preventive and medicinal effect against the immunomodulator sensitive sarcoma 180 tumour system.

Goji Berry

Goji is a bright orange-red berry that comes from a shrub that’s native to China. Researchers discovered unparalleled polysaccahrides in goji berries that have not been discovered in any other herb source to date. Goji berries contain the polysaccharides called LBP1, LBP2, LBP3, and LBP4. In animal-based experiments, goji berry has been shown to improve the immune system by increasing the lymphocyte transformation rate and by improving the phagocytosis function of macrophages. In addition increases the activity of natural killer cells, T lymphocytes and cytotoxic cells. One clinical trial of elderly participants demonstrated that in 67 percent of cases, goji  taken daily for 3 weeks led to a three-fold increase in lymphocyte T-cell transformation and doubled the activity of white cell interleukin-2.
